What is a 'tough read'?

A tough read is what we call a call that didn’t land — you picked a side, the question settled, and it settled the other way.

Notice what the name does. It puts the difficulty on the question, not on you. The read was tough; the reader wasn’t bad. That’s kind on purpose, because everyone here misses — the names at the top of the board included — and some answers are genuinely hard to see coming.

But kind isn’t the same as soft. A tough read still counts. It stays on your record next to everything else, because a record that only kept the hits wouldn’t be a record — it’d be a story you tell about yourself. The name doesn’t erase the miss. It just refuses to make a drama of it. You called it, it went the other way, it’s written down. You go again.

That’s why you’ll hear the room say it to each other. Somebody’s call comes apart in the final minute, and the room doesn’t jeer — what comes back is “tough read.” Two words that mean: it was real, it was hard, and we’ve all been there.
